Once a month, Pet Overpopulation Prevention (POPP) hosts two “POPP Power Days”, days when our low-cost spay and neuter clinic brings in Dr. Ganesan’s traveling vet team to double the number of sterilizations performed. For June, POPP put on a special POPP Power Week! POPP has set out a goal to spay and neuter even more animals in 2026, and POPP Power Week is a part of that.
On Tuesday, the clinic held a local rescue high-volume day. On Wednesday, thanks to grant funding, the clinic put on a free, dogs-only event. Finally, on Thursday, the clinic offered a discounted feral cat event.
Local Rescue High-Volume Spays and Neuters
On Tuesday, the day started at 7 AM. In total, the clinic spayed and neutered 68 cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies. Almost all of the pets seen were from Washington local rescues and shelters. Some of the rescues included POPP, Pronto Puppy, Adams County Pet Rescue, and Tri City Kitty Rescue TCKR.
Free Dogs-Only Spay and Neuter Day
For the first time ever, the clinic offered a free, dogs-only spay and neuter event. This was made possible by a generous grant from the 15/10 Foundation and facilitation from Forgotten Dogs Rescue. The 15/10 Foundation is a nonprofit that was launched from the Twitter WeRateDogs, helping sponsor free and low-cost clinics across the country. Forgotten Dogs Rescue is a foster-based Washington dog rescue that focuses on helping pit-bull-type dogs.
The goal of the free dog clinic was to help the most vulnerable and in-need members of our community, including those in the Hispanic, unhoused, and veteran communities. The clinic saw multi-generational dog families, the result of “oops” litters from families who couldn’t afford to spay and neuter. There were individuals who had fallen on hard times and were living out of their cars, so excited for the opportunity for their pets to be seen. It was a gratifying experience for all involved; in total, the clinic treated 52 dogs!
Discounted Feral Cat Day
Thursday was another first for the POPP spay and neuter clinic: it was the most feral cats treated in one day. More than 70 feral cats were fixed. The event offered more than a 50% discount on feral cats; for $50 each, every cat was spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and treated for parasites. Some individuals brought in one cat, while others brought in 6-10 cats! It was great to see members of the community step up to help address feral cat overpopulation.
“It’s incredibly rewarding,” said Christina Coughlin, Vet Assistant at the POPP Spay and Neuter Clinic. “It’s not just making them healthier and giving the best chance at life as a feral cat. It prevents other cats from facing the same fate of being homeless, unwanted, and considered a pest.”
